Mass production of 3nm M2 Pro and M2 Max processors starts next month – 4nm node for A16 chip

According to the latest news, mass production of the new M2 Pro and M2 Max processors of Apple is going to happen next month to begin These two chips are based on TSMC’s latest 3nm node, and they are supposed to be used in the new generation of desktop computers and Mac laptops. Of course, the mass production of processors will start next month, in this sense is not See you soon on the new Macs. Currently, the news about the “iPhone 14” is hot and the Pro models of this phone are going to be equipped with the new A16 Bionic chipset, which has not reached the 3nm node and is developed on the basis of TSMC’s 4nm node.

M2 Pro and M2 Max – the first chips with 3nm node

According to a report published on the Commercial Times website, the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors will be the first chips developed based on TSMC’s advanced 3nm node. Of course, it was previously reported that the mass production of Apple’s new processors will begin by the end of this year, but it was not clear from which month. Unfortunately, for several reasons, the 3nm node was not used for the development of the A16 Bionic chip.

The first and most important reason is that Apple placed orders for the A16 Bionic chip for TSMC’s 4nm node long before the company’s 3nm node was announced. The second reason is that the mass production of large wafers on such a small lithography means a decrease in production line efficiency and a decrease in the number of wafers ready for Apple. This may have delayed the release of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Considering that Apple has given its suppliers a ready circulation of 95 million iPhone 14 units by the end of this year, the supply chain should be continuously established for several months. In addition, the new generation of Mac computers equipped with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors are scheduled to be introduced next year, and the Mac circulation is not as high as the iPhone circulation. We would love to meet the next generation of Mac computers this year, but many factors go into determining when a new product will be released.

Specifications of M2 Pro and M2 Max processors

Regarding the technical specifications, we must say that the M2 Max processor for the highest version will have a CPU with 12 cores and a GPU with 38 cores. We do not have information about the technical specifications of the M2 Pro processor. Both processors have the same maximum RAM as the M1 processors, i.e. 64GB. But the difference is that Apple uses new LPDDR5 memories for M2 processors.

We assume that TSMC’s 3nm node will be used to develop the A17 Bionic processor, which will be used inside the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max phones. While the regular iPhone 15 models will be equipped with the A16 Bionic chipset, just like what Apple is doing with the Pro and non-Pro models of the iPhone 14.
