Million dollar auction of Shakespeare’s rare book

An original version of William Shakespeare’s “Foley I”, considered one of the most important relics of English literature, will be auctioned in New York next month.

Charso Press: Published about 400 years ago, this book is one of less than 20 copies still in the possession of private collectors. The estimated value of this book is estimated at 2.5 million dollars.

The first folio, written and edited by two of Shakespeare’s most trusted collaborators, John Hemmings and Henry Condel, contains 36 plays, half of which have never been published before. Since there are no other manuscripts of Shakespeare’s writings, if it were not for the first folly, 18 plays, including Macbeth, The Storm, and The Twelfth Night by this famous author, would have been lost in the pages of history. Of course, the influence of Foley I in English literature goes beyond this; The classification of Shakespeare’s works into three categories: comedy, tragedy, and historical works, presented by Hemings and Candel, is still used in modern interpretations and is valid.

The antique book, which will be auctioned next month, includes annotations, paper corner designs and ink stains left by its owners over the centuries.

This edition will be on display at Sotheby’s galleries in London from June 1 to June 15 (June 25, 1401) and will go on sale on July 7 in New York.

William Shakespeare is one of the greatest and most famous playwrights in the world, who achieved world fame by creating 39 outstanding plays. In addition to writing plays, he was also a poet and wrote 145 lyric poems and two poems, which makes him the most prolific writer of the sixteenth century.
