Millions of Syrian children need UN assistance

A statement from UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa said today (Sunday) that millions of children in Syria and other neighboring countries continue to live in fear, homelessness and need.

According to the latest UN figures, “more than 6.5 million Syrian children are in need of assistance” and “some 5.8 million Syrian children are in need of assistance in neighboring countries.”

“This is the highest number in 11 years,” Adel Khedr said in a statement: “Many families are struggling to make ends meet while the prices of essential items are high. , Including food, partly due to the crisis in Ukraine, is rising sharply.

$ 20 million urgent need

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also regrets the reduction in its international budget, saying it has “received less than half of this year’s budget”. The organization also announced an “urgent need of $ 20 million (nearly € 19 million) for its overseas operations”, which is the only means of survival for the nearly one million children in northwestern Syria.

“The crisis in Syria is still a long way from the final stage,” the statement said. As of 2011, 13,000 children have been injured and killed, 213 of whom were injured in the first three months of 2022.

The report says that since the beginning of the unrest in Syria in 2011, about half a million people have lost their lives, and the unrest in this country has marked the largest wave of migration since World War II.
