Naming a newly discovered plant called Shahid Mohitban
According to Moj News Agency, the researchers of the Botany Department of the Plant Sciences Research Institute of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, during research trips in the protected area of Golul and Sarani and adjacent areas in Shirvan city (North Khorasan province), collected samples of wild onions. It is widely known that it is an unknown and new species of Allium.
Researchers named the newly discovered plant in honor of the environment of Martyr Saeed Parham, Allium parhamii (Parhami onion).
Martyr Parham, one of the servants of North Khorasan, was martyred on December 30, 2010 while performing organizational duties and protecting the natural resources of the homeland in the protected area of Golul and Sarani by the bullets of the aggressors.
Morphological studies, seed surface microstructure by electron microscopy as well as chromosomal studies showed that this new species is completely different from its close relatives.
Parhami onion belongs to a group of mountain onions that are one of the closest relatives of ornamental onions based on genealogical similarities using gene sequences in their DNA.
The species is also classified as “critically endangered” according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The natural habitat of this plant is located in the Kopehdagh Biosphere Reserve, which is one of the critical points of plant biodiversity in northeastern Iran and the protection of natural resources of these areas is of great importance.
The scientific article of this discovery, which is part of the research results of Maryam Behroozian, a postdoctoral researcher at the Plant Science Research Institute, headed by Farshid Memariani, has been published in Phytotaxa Botanical Journal called Behroozian, Memarian and Joharchi. The new species Allium parhamii is decorated.
