Politico’s account of the latest progress in the Vienna negotiations / Doubts remain about the agreement

According to the report of Fars News Agency, a senior official of the European Union claimed that the negotiations to lift the sanctions in Vienna will end today. This official claimed that the text of the agreement has been finalized.

According to the type of news that is being broadcast these days, it is possible that this European official is “Enrique Mora”, the chief negotiator of the European Union. Western media have not yet mentioned the name of this European official.

The reporter of the Wall Street Journal newspaper, which monitors the news related to the negotiations, wrote on Twitter, quoting a senior official of one of the three European countries: “The text put on the table by the European Union coordinator is the ultimate flexibility of all of us. This marks the end of almost a year and a half of negotiations. “Now is the time for final decisions.”

Meanwhile, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran said today (Monday), August 17, in response to reporters’ questions about the Wall Street Journal’s claim that the final text of the agreement may be prepared in Vienna within the next few hours. Due to the continuation of the discussions on a few important remaining issues, we are not yet at a stage where we can talk about the finalization of the text.”

The Wall Street Journal claimed that the final text of the agreement in Vienna will be finalized in the next few hours.

A few minutes ago, the reporter of Fars news agency confirmed the claims made in the western media and reported that the new round of sanctions lifting negotiations has ended and the negotiating team of the Islamic Republic of Iran will return to Tehran in a few hours. (More details).

The new round of negotiations started on Thursday, August 13 in Vienna. This round of negotiations was held after the indirect consultations between Iran and the United States in Doha.

In a report about the latest state of the negotiations, Politico wrote: “Western officials say that consultations on technical issues that were left open in the final text distributed by Josep Burrell have ended.”

According to this publication, the final draft that is on the table specifies the steps that Iran and the United States must take to resume the full implementation of the JCPOA. Today, the European Union will officially present the prepared final text to the parties participating in the negotiations and will ask Iran and the United States to agree on it.

According to this claim, if an agreement is reached, the foreign ministers of the countries will return to Vienna for the full revival of the JCPOA. “There is a real chance of an agreement, but as always there are doubts,” a Western official told Politico.

Politico writes that in the past five days, negotiators have reached solutions to some “technical questions” that were still open in the final text to revive the JCPOA.

One of these questions is related to the details of the reinstallation of the IAEA’s surveillance cameras. Iran turned off these cameras in July after the approval of an anti-Iranian resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors.

Analysts say that some factors such as pressure from the Zionist regime, disagreements with Congress and internal problems in the United States have been the reason for the reluctance of the Biden administration to return to the JCPOA in the past months.

Biden came to office in 2021 when the policy of maximum pressure against Iran failed to achieve its goals. In addition to failing to form a new nuclear agreement, this policy has caused division in relations between the countries on both sides of the Atlantic, jeopardizing the effectiveness of the sanctions system as one of the main tools of American foreign policy, and most importantly, strengthening the anti-arrogance trend in Iran. have been.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has made the two categories of “verification of the lifting of sanctions” and “obtaining a guarantee regarding the durability of the JCPOA” as its main demands in the negotiations to lift the sanctions and emphasized that only returning to the bilateral agreement, which in exchange for some restrictions, will bring concrete economic benefits to the Iranian nation. He considers it logical to be accompanied and accepts it.
