Armed militias under Iranian command have announced that they will respond strongly to Israel for attacking their positions in the Tadmor region of Syria.
According to Sputnik, this was reported by the Iranian news agency UNION, quoting the command of the Syrian Allied Operations Headquarters.
The Syrian army command had previously announced that the Israeli air force had targeted a number of targets south of Tadmor (Palmyra), killing one Syrian soldier and wounding three others. The Israeli military later said in response to a question from RIA Novosti about the attacks in the Tadmor region that it would not comment on foreign media reports.
“We have decided to respond strongly to the aggression in Tadmor,” the Syrian Allied Operations Command said.
Shiite militias were killed and wounded as a result of Israeli airstrikes overnight, according to the command, which focused on support facilities and gathering places for Shiite fighters.
The statement from the General Command of Shiite Armed Organizations emphasizes that Shiite militias are in Syria to support the Syrian leadership in the fight against terrorist groups, primarily ISIL (banned in the Russian Federation).
It is noted that the Iranian military is also present in Syria at the invitation of Damascus and, according to the country’s officials, is assisting the Syrian government forces in the fight against terrorism. Iran has said it will “give a crushing response to those who want to harm Iran’s presence.”
The Israelis say the main purpose of the bombing of Syria, which has continued over the past few years, is to fight the hostile presence of Iran and Tehran’s allies on its northern borders.
