Qatari Foreign Minister: We want Iran and the United States to return to the UN Security Council

“We urge Iran and the United States to return to the Security Council and not escalate tensions,” the Qatari foreign minister was quoted as saying by the Associated Press, according to IRNA. We do not want to see a nuclear rivalry in the region. The core issue is very important and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Regarding Qatar’s relations with Iran, Abdul Rahman said: “Iran is Qatar’s neighbor and we should have good neighborly relations with them.” This relationship has never been an obstacle to relations with the United States or other countries. We use our relationship with Iran as a good way to interact, communicate and facilitate communication between our allies and Tehran.
He added: “Although we may be opposed to some of Iran’s policies in the region, we will continue to interact with them so that we can have more stability in the region.”
Regarding the developments in Afghanistan, Mohammad bin Abdul Rahman said: “Our first priority is to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the people of Afghanistan.” Ignoring Afghanistan would be a big mistake. Isolation has never been successful. That is why we believe in engaging with the Taliban, because they are in power now. We always ask them to facilitate the transfer of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and to live up to their commitments.
In another part of his speech, the Qatari Foreign Minister referred to the developments in Ethiopia, and we are concerned about the escalation of tensions in Ethiopia. Stability in the Horn of Africa is very important for our region. Qatar has no mediating role in Ethiopia.
He also spoke about the issue of relations with Syria and the interaction of some countries in the region with this country, including the UAE: Qatar is not thinking about normalizing relations with Syria and the government of Bashar al-Assad. Other countries in the region that seek to normalize relations with Syria decide on their own interests, and we hope that the countries will refrain from continuing to normalize relations with Syria.
It is worth mentioning in this press conference. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the signing of two agreements with his Qatari counterpart, stating that in the first agreement, Qatar will protect US interests in Afghanistan.
