Radeon RX 7600S laptop graphics card, at least 6% weaker than RTX 4060

About four months have passed since the initial introduction of Radeon RX 7000 RDNA 3 graphics cards for laptops, and laptop manufacturers are slowly preparing themselves for the release of laptops equipped with these cards. Recently, laptop manufacturers have started shipping RX 7000 laptops, but not for launch; But to check. The German site ComputerBase is one of the first hardware media that was able to find a laptop device equipped with Radeon RX 7600S graphics card to check

Radeon RX 7600S graphics card

Radeon RX 7600S graphics card is a low-end laptop graphics card equipped with Navi 33 RDNA 3 processor. The specifications of this graphics card are completely at the level of a low-end graphics card; 8GB memory with 128-bit interface, PCIe 4.0 interface with only 8 lanes and low TDP. But on the other hand, the 7600S graphics card is mostly supposed to compete with Nvidia’s Max-Q cards, and its performance is not perfect. In fact, this graphics card is the weakest RX 7000 RDNA 3 graphics card introduced so far.

As confirmed by AMD, this card is supposed to have 28 CU units equivalent to 1792 shader processors and operate in the thermal power range of 50 to 75 watts. Of course, according to CB reviews, the energy consumption of this graphics card goes up to 95 watts, but while running games with RT, its energy consumption decreases to about 83 watts.

The testing platform of this graphics card by CB website is a TUF Gaming A16 laptop device from Asus, which is equipped with a Ryzen 7 7735H (Rembrandt-R Zen3) processor in addition to the Radeon RX 7600S graphics card. Of course, this laptop can be ordered with Ryzen 7040HS APUs later, and the only graphics card that can be ordered for it at the moment is the RX 7600S. This laptop also supports DDR5-4800 memory.

A direct competitor to the RTX 4060 laptop

CB’s main focus is on comparing the Radeon RX 7600S graphics card with the GeForce RTX 4060 laptop graphics card. The maximum power consumption of the RTX 4060 graphics card goes up to 140 watts, but its average power consumption in gaming is around 100 watts (in comparison, the power consumption of the RX 7600S was in the range of 83-88 watts). The interesting thing is that both graphics cards operate at frequencies higher than 2.4 GHz; 2.45 GHz for RX and 2.6 GHz for RTX.

At a thermal power of 70 watts, both graphics cards show the same and similar performance in the 3DMark Time Spy test. But by increasing the thermal power range, the scale tips in favor of the RTX 4060 graphics card.

As ComputerBase concluded from this review, 8GB of memory is the biggest limitation of the RX 7600S graphics card, even more so than the limited PCIe lanes. The structure and operation of the RDNA 3 architecture compared to Ada Lovelace is such that Radeon graphics cards require more memory than GeForce graphics cards.

Unfortunately, in the Ray Tracing test, the RX 7600S doesn’t stand a chance against the RTX 4060, offering only 50% of its performance. On the other hand, without RT, the difference between the two graphics cards varies from 6% (low-quality textures to compensate for memory limitations) to 13% (high-quality textures for both cards), although within the power consumption range of 80 watts for both graphics cards.
