“Rape and Assault on Rohingya Women” Winner of the Special Prize of the European Union Festival

According to the Fars News Agency media reporter, quoting Euronews, Which exposed the sexual abuse and exploitation of Rohingya women, won the official Lorenzo Natali Festival Award.
The story “Rape and Assault on Rohingya Women” won a special prize at the EU Festival.
The award, organized by the European Commission’s Office for International Partnerships, is given to journalists who do exceptional work on issues such as democracy, human rights, inequality and climate change.
For this year’s festival, the jury awarded a special prize to Peri Saikia, an Indian journalist whose research paper exposed the Myanmar army’s crackdown on Rohingya Muslims. In that report, Saikia described the plight of women who had escaped torture and persecution and were living in difficult conditions. Saikia described with painful quotes from these women how Rohingya women were deceived by traffickers and eventually married to unknown and elderly men in Kashmir.
It has also repeatedly raped these women and desperately sought them to reunite with their families.
The festival jury described Saikia’s work as a clear report that has the potential to be on the agenda of policymakers and make the necessary changes to protect vulnerable women.
“This award is not a victory for me, but for women who fight for concepts such as justice, dignity and freedom every day of their lives,” Saikia said in a video statement after receiving the award, thanking the jury. This award will actually give them the most hope. These women trusted me a lot to tell me their stories. “I promised them that I would share their problems with the people of the world.”
