Renewal of US-Greek defense agreement under the pretext of training

The agreement was extended in the presence of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in Washington. Greece and the United States first signed a bilateral defense cooperation agreement in 1990, and the agreement is renewed every year.
According to reports, the agreement has now been extended for five years, with the aim of giving unlimited credit to this defense cooperation, unless one of the parties cancels it two years before the end of the five years.
“This update will allow the agreement to remain in force indefinitely,” Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told a joint news conference on Thursday, local time.

“We are strengthening our defense cooperation today,” he said.
“Our strategic partnership has reached unprecedented levels with increased cooperation in many areas, including law enforcement, counter-terrorism, energy, economy, trade, culture and public relations,” he said.
One week ago, the Greek parliament approved a major defense agreement with France, under which Athens will buy three ships from Paris at a cost of three billion euros ($ 3.5 billion).
Earlier, as tensions escalated with Turkey, Greece’s NATO ally over the right to exploit energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean announced plans to modernize its military and defense industry in addition to buying new weapons.
