Republicans try to distance themselves from Trump’s election controversy

According to IRNA, the media added: McConnell told reporters on Tuesday that he is against the amnesty of Trump supporters who have been convicted for breaking the law in the attack of January 6, 2021 (December 17, 1999).

The attack killed a congressional police officer, injured a number of other police officers and caused more than $ 1 million in damage.

McConnell’s recent remarks are the latest attempt by him and many of his colleagues in the Senate to cover the events of the 2020 election.

Senate Republicans believe they can regain a majority in the Senate and House of Representatives in the midterm congressional elections this fall.

They seek to address the problems of inflation and other issues that keep US President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party out of the ballot box in the November election.

The problem with Republicans is that with such remarks, Trump is once again opening their feet to a controversy that is largely fabricated by Trump, and Republican Senate leaders see him as a political loser.

Trump raised the issue of pardoning those convicted of attacking Congress at a public meeting on Saturday, saying he would treat them fairly if he ran in the next election and would pardon them if necessary.

McConnell said the 2020 election was approved on December 14 of that year by an electoral college vote on the winner. What we saw on January 6 was an attempt to prevent a peaceful transfer of power.

Other Republicans have opposed Trump’s offer of amnesty for those who attacked Congress.

Roy Blunt, a senior Republican senator and member of the party’s leadership team, said he agreed with the Justice Department’s efforts to investigate the plot to attack Congress.

Republican Sen. Tom Tilis also said voters are more interested in having their political leaders focus on key public policy challenges; Not to reconsider the 2020 election.

“Most people care about issues like the Ukraine crisis, the economy, the continued recovery from Covid 19,” he said. At the same time, those who destroyed federal property and harmed police officers must be held accountable.

Retired U.S. Sen. Richard Barr, one of seven Republicans who voted to oust Trump last year, has said he opposes the former president’s proposal for an amnesty.

He also questioned claims that Trump’s vice president Mike Pence could have declared him the winner.

Nearly a year ago, Richard Barr called the attack on Congress “an attempt to undermine democratic institutions and ignore the will of the Americans through violence.”

Explaining his vote to condemn Trump, he said the former US president had been involved in promoting conspiracy theories to cast doubt on the election.

“Even Trump’s closest allies are trying to distance themselves from Trump’s offer to pardon those convicted of attacking Congress,” Hill wrote. “No, I do not want to send the signal at all that attacking Congress was the right thing to do,” Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told CBS’s “Face de Nation” program Sunday.

Sen. John Cornell, a member of McConnell’s leadership team, said Republicans should look at other issues instead of re-raising issues related to the 2020 election.
