Rising Paris-London tensions; The possibility of British sanctions is growing

According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, the French government announced on Wednesday evening, Tehran time, that it was working on possible sanctions against Britain, due to the lack of the necessary permission from Britain for the activities of French fishermen.

According to the news agency “ReutersFrench government spokesman Gabriel Atal said Paris was preparing a list of sanctions that could be made public by tomorrow, Thursday. “Some of them will be implemented early next week, unless sufficient progress is made,” Atal added. “Our patience is running out.”

The French government official stressed that supplying French electricity to Britain could be one of Paris’ s sanctions against London.

“It should be emphasized that 98% of fishing permits have been issued,” a spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in response to a question.

“We continue to work with the French government to grant more fishing licenses based on the evidence they provide, as you know, a number of additional licenses have been issued in recent weeks,” he added. “We will continue to talk to them about this.”

French Deputy Foreign Minister Clement Bowen told a French parliament hearing that France could increase border controls on British goods if the situation with fishing permits did not improve.

The dispute is over the licensing of fishing in territorial waters 6 to 12 nautical miles off the coast of England, as well as off the coast of Jersey, an area on the English Channel.

Fishing and controlling British waters was one of the hot topics in the 2016 British referendum to leave the EU. But British fishermen have since accused the London government of selling them for financial gain by allowing European boats to fish in their territorial waters.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Clement Boone told London: “You can not say that you do what is good for you, but we do not do what is not good for Britain.”

Paris has accused London of playing politics by granting fishing licenses in the post-election period and called on other EU countries to take a similar stance against Britain’s disregard for new trade relations.
