According to Mehr News Agency, Robert Mali, the US Special Representative for Iran, said in an interview with Reuters that the Vienna talks are unlikely to take place without the release of American citizens detained in Iran.

Explaining the claim, he added: “These two categories are separate, but it is very difficult for us to imagine a return to the agreement as long as four Americans have been taken hostage by Iran.”
Mali continued his claim: “Therefore, although in the nuclear case, we are pursuing indirect negotiations with Iran, we are still indirectly pursuing talks with them to ensure the release of our hostages.”
