Russia imposes sanctions on US and Canadian lawmakers


According to Fars News Agency’s International Service, after the Canadian and US governments imposed sanctions on Russian officials, Moscow also intends to take retaliatory measures in this regard.

The Russian Foreign Ministry plans to impose sanctions on 398 members of the US House of Representatives and 87 Canadian senators, and will take action against others.

The move comes after Washington imposed sanctions on 328 members of the Russian Duma (parliament) on March 24 in response to an attack on Ukraine, Interfax news agency reported on Wednesday evening.

According to the news agency «ReutersRussia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the sanctions imposed on Wednesday were a reflection of US sanctions, but did not provide further details.

The ministry added that anyone on the list would be barred from traveling to Russia.

“New announcements of Russian countermeasures are planned in the near future, including an increase in the number of people on the sanctions list and other retaliatory measures,” Interfax quoted the statement as saying.

Canada announced on February 24 that it would add 351 members of the Duma to its sanctions list.

The United States froze all assets of 328 Russian envoys in the country and barred them from doing business with American citizens.

Earlier, a Dutch economy ministry official announced new restrictions on Russia and a freeze on several hundred million euros in assets. (More details)
