Russia: We do not intend to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine

Russia’s foreign ministry said on Friday it had no plans to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, according to Fars News Agency.

According to the news agency «Anatoly“We have repeatedly denied the allegations about Russia’s possible use of nuclear weapons in special military operations,” said Alexei Zaitsev, Russia’s deputy foreign ministry spokesman.

“Russia strongly adheres to the principle that a nuclear war is not a victory and should not be fought,” the Russian diplomat added.

“Last year, Russia was able to convince the United States and then all five countries of the world nuclear power to reaffirm their commitment to this principle,” he said.

“This is not the first time that Westerners have speculated about Russia’s use of nuclear weapons and told them ‘deliberate lies,'” Zaitsev said.

Russia’s deputy foreign ministry spokesman has reiterated that Russia will use nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack on the country or attacks with conventional weapons to the extent that they endanger Russia’s existence.

Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on February 24. This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the goal of his military operation is to “demilitarize Ukraine” and “de-Naziize” Russia.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, the United States and its allies have imposed heavy sanctions on Russia and provided significant financial and weapons assistance to the Ukrainians. A Kremlin spokesman recently warned that the supply of heavy weapons and military equipment to Ukraine would threaten European security and lead to instability.
