Samsung uses a new hinge in the Galaxy Z Fold 5

Samsung wants to use a new hinge design for the next generation of its flagship foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which looks like a drop of water. Now, apparently, Samsung is conducting reliability tests of this hinge; However, its lifespan is no different from the hinge used in the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Using the new hinge will reduce the thickness of Samsung’s upcoming foldable phone and also reduce the screen crease. However, according to Korean media report The ElecSamsung has tested this hinge for 200,000 arm closures, which is no different from its previous generation.

Meanwhile, Samsung has tested its new hinge 200,000 times, and its competitors show a higher performance than themselves. For example, the Honor Magic Vs and Oppo Find N2 each last up to 400,000 arm closures.

The hinge of Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones will last up to 5 years

Today’s report says that the maximum number of times the hinge can be folded in Samsung’s tests is 300,000 times, however, 200,000 times is enough for the hinge to pass the reliability test. After this amount of bracing, the hinge should retain 85% of its original function.

This test is theoretically valid for 5 years. In fact, if a user wears this phone nearly 100 times a day, he can use it for 5 years without any problems. This amount reaches 10 years for Honor and Oppo phones. Of course, in general, most users change their phones after 5 years.

Although the hinge life of Samsung folding phones may be less than that of competitors, we must also mention that these phones use the IPX8 standard to resist water penetration, while there is no news of this feature in Honor and Oppo phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are expected to be announced in the summer of 2014.
