Meta, as the owner of this messenger, says that when sending a photo, a new option with the “HD” icon has been added, when you select it, your photos will be sent in full resolution. Of course, by default, the image quality is set to “Standard” option to use less bandwidth of the users’ internet and transfer faster.

The amount of pixels is one part and the compression is another part. Although WhatsApp does not reduce the pixels of an image by enabling HD mode, it still compresses them. It should also be noted that in WhatsApp, all images (both HD and non-HD) are sent end-to-end encrypted.
