The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that Iran and Saudi Arabia have made significant progress in talks on security in the Persian Gulf region.
According to Sputnik, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said: “Serious progress has been made in the field of security in the Persian Gulf.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh announced Tehran’s “more regular contacts” with Riyadh in recent months.
He said talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia had taken place in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, on various issues, including security in the Persian Gulf.
Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, he also noted “significant progress” on Gulf security in bilateral talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh and Tehran, whose diplomatic relations have been severed since January 2016 following the attack on the Saudi embassy in Iran, have been accusing each other of destabilizing the Persian Gulf for decades.
