The basics of determining religious hours
The jurisprudential bases of determining the religious times in Islam are based on the observation of the position of the sun in the sky. In fact, the terrestrial observer observes the location of the sun and, based on jurisprudence, determines its times to the horizon of the region where it is present. For example, when the sun has the highest height in the sky of a region, the moment of Islamic noon has arrived for that region. The jurisprudential bases of determining the time of morning, noon and evening calls in the Shia religion are summarized as follows:
Fajr Azan: The first light of the sun (Fajr Sadiq) will appear and spread towards the east.
Sunrise: the top edge of the sun’s disk will come out from under the horizon.
Midday call to prayer: The sun is at its highest height in the sky and the index shadow reaches its lowest value.
Sunset: the disappearance and hiding of the sun from the western horizon.
Maghrib call to prayer: shortly after sunset and when the eastern sun (red at sunset) reaches or passes over the observer’s head.
