Sodai Simorgh selection board member: We see good films in the 41st festival

According to Fars news agency, citing the public relations of Fajr Film Festival, Reza Pourhossein wrote in a note in the general evaluation of the cinematographic works of this period of the festival: The evaluation of films should be done in accordance with the corona and post-coronavirus conditions. In the corona situation and after that, there has been damage to the cinema and the set of artistic activities, which is still going on.

However, we see good films in the 41st festival. In terms of thematic aspects, there are problems in the process of filmmaking that writers or directors use less psychological, sociological and philosophical rules and themes. Note that the explanation of the phenomena of individual and social life cannot be independent of scientific laws.

He added: Filmmaking is an artistic and multi-layered artistic and philosophical expression of life phenomena in individual, social and sometimes global spheres. In this matter, our cinema has a weakness of “thought”. Of course, we have seen some thought-based films in all festivals. In this year’s festival, several films like this, meaning deep, have been presented. Another point about the 41st festival is the reduction of bitterness about common social issues. You see, the filmmaker’s duty is to reflect the issues of his society and even the world society. If this reflection is realistic, the mission is well accomplished; But staying away from realism and inducing a pus and black society is not fair.

According to him, this is the judgment that is far from fairness and will cause despair in the audience. The gestalt and result of cinema is hope and progress towards the horizons, the filmmaker can be realistic, raise negative social issues well, express social harms; But he does not have the right to express his personal emotions in such a way as to cast a circle of depression and despair on the society. Another point is the lack of films that confirm the popular discourses of the country. See, scientific discourse is the main factor behind the progress and authority of Islamic Iran today.

Pourhossein continued: Our progress is that we have entered several technical science clubs. In this matter, the world looks at our scientific and technological progress with admiration, but unfortunately we do not reflect it ourselves, and with thousands of regrets, we sometimes witness self-deprecation and self-destruction. Why does our cinema neglect to create the spirit of scientism? Is it less scientific, or less of a concern? Let’s not forget that an important part of today’s world cinema is opening a window to create a scientific spirit in the society.

The member of the selection board of Sodai Simorgh section of the 41st Fajr International Film Festival emphasized: This issue has many flaws in Iranian cinema. Of course, the expansion of scientific discourse is more visible in science fiction and children’s cinema, but in real cinema there are thousands of interesting subjects for filmmaking that are not seen in Iranian cinema. Perhaps it is better to say that our audiences and people are deprived of dramatic subjects in the field of science and knowledge due to the lack of cinema.

He added: Another point is the absence of comedy films in the festival. Of course, there are traces of humor in some of the films of the festival, which are mostly verbal, and of course, sometimes they try to prepare the ground for laughter and joy with ugly jokes, but in my opinion, they are not successful. Comic films have rules that use more “situation” than words. Perhaps, in today’s social and economic conditions, making noble uplifting films is more necessary.

In any case, in the 41st festival, we see good films, and directors and producers, as well as technical and artistic agents, have had admirable efforts that continue in some films. We should be grateful to them who, in today’s conditions, put themselves on fire to respond to the great nature of the Iranian cinema audience.
