But Estonia also announced the documentary “Smoky Sauna Adoption” directed by “Ana Hintz” as its official representative in the upcoming Oscars. The story of this documentary is about women who reveal their innermost secrets to each other in the “smoke sauna”.

Before this, Switzerland had nominated the film “Thunder” and the film “Melody” by Iranian director Behrouz Sabat Rasool to the Oscar Academy.

According to the latest Oscar rules, films must have at least seven consecutive days of commercial release with ticket sales between December 1, 2022 (December 10, 1401) and October 31, 2023 (November 9, 1402) in order to compete in the international film category.

To make it easier for films to meet the Academy’s requirements, the Academy also allows films to be eligible for release outside the country of origin (the presenting country), provided the film is released outside the United States and its territories for at least seven consecutive days in A commercial cinema with ticket sales should be released.

If any version of the film is screened prior to public release, the film will no longer be eligible to compete in the International Film category of the Academy Awards. Non-cinematic screening includes showing the film in online screening systems (online platforms), offering it via DVD or showing it on the Internet, and even showing it in airlines.

Also, animated works and long documentaries can also be introduced to the Academy as official representatives of countries in this category, and at least 50% of the film’s dialogues must be in a non-English language (the language of the country of origin) and it is necessary to add English subtitles.

If a film wants to be the official representative of a country’s cinema at the Oscars, the artistic control over that film must be the responsibility of the nationals of that country (that is, a major part of the main actors of the film must be from the presenting country).

Last year, 93 countries presented their representative films to the Academy to compete in the category of the best international film. During the first stage, 15 films were selected as initial candidates and finally 5 films were selected as final candidates of this category through voting by the members of the Academy, and finally, at the awards ceremony, the film “There is no news on the Western Front” by “Edward Berger” from Germany won. The Oscar was the best foreign film of the year.

Iranian cinema also chose the movie “World War III” by Homan Sidi as its official representative in Oscar 2023.
