The best film and animation adaptations of “Alice in Wonderland”

“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” or “Alice in Wonderland” is an English novel written by Lewis Carroll, which was first published in 1856 and since then has been the source of countless television and film adaptations and has become one of the most adapted works of history; From children’s animations to much darker works for adults, this beloved classic never lost its freshness for the audience.

Charso Press: “Alice in Wonderland” tells the story of a young girl named Alice who finds herself in Wonderland after falling down a rabbit hole; A place full of strange characters. A story with amazing creatures, humanoid, surreal, immortal and suitable for the big screen.

5 of the best film adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, in order from worst to best:

5. Melissa in Wonderland (2009)

  • Director: Simon Fellows
  • Actors: Mackie Grace, Donnie Dyer, Nathaniel Parker, Paul Kay and…
  • IMDB rating of the movie: 5.8 out of 10
  • Movie score in Rotten Tomatoes: 10%

This film adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s popular fairy tale takes place in England and the crime-ridden areas of London today. The film is about a student who crashes a taxi and wakes up in a surreal wonderland; Where nothing is as it seems. Although fantasy elements are dominant in this adventure, “Melissa in Wonderland” is not completely faithful to the source of the adaptation and takes a more serious approach. Most of the main characters are present in this adaptation but with a more realistic appearance. For example, the character of the White Rabbit is depicted in the image of the mysterious Cockney taxi driver, played by Danny Dyer.

4. Alice in Wonderland (1933)

  • Director: Norman McLeod
  • Actors: Charlotte Henry, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, D.B. C. Fields and…
  • IMDB rating of the movie: 6.3 out of 10
  • Movie rating on Rotten Tomatoes: 67%

Despite the presence of the biggest stars of that time, W. C. Fields, Gary Cooper, Edna May Oliver and Cary Grant in this version, the adaptation failed at the box office and was mixed with viewers and critics. Alice Carroll’s adventures are full of surreal images that deal more with adult issues than children; And of course, this is part of its beauty. But watching these images and themes on the cinema screen disturbed some audiences and raised concerns about the age group of the film. In China, it was classified as a “superstitious film” and then banned due to its “weirdness” and unscientific elements. The performance of the film even raised doubts as to whether this style of film with its unique images and characters has a chance to succeed on the big screen. Fortunately, a few years later, the success of “The Wizard of Oz” completely dispelled these concerns. This adaptation was re-evaluated in the following decades and is now recognized as a classic work and a masterful example of comedy of the absurd.

3. Alice in Wonderland (2010)

  • Director: Tim Burton
  • Actors: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Cutter, Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway and…
  • IMDB rating of the movie: 6.4 out of 10
  • Movie rating on Rotten Tomatoes: 51%

Tim Burton’s adaptation is the best-selling adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. A hugely successful film with an unattainable record of grossing over a billion dollars (not counting the merchandise Disney sold thanks to the film’s popularity, of course) because the project was so important to Disney, Burton was given an over-budget. The end result was one of the most stunning and beautiful films of all time. The audience was not only impressed by the visual effects and CGI of the film, but also attracted by the flawless performances of the actors. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover all gave exceptional and unforgettable performances, and Mia Wasikowska shone as Alice. The only criticism of Tim Burton’s project is that it lacks some of the more exciting and quirky aspects of his previous work. Aspects that could blend well with Alice’s wonderland and create a monstrous combination.

2. Alice (1988)

  • Director: Jan Schwenkmayer
  • Actors: Camilla Power
  • IMDB rating of the movie: 7.4 out of 10
  • Movie rating on Rotten Tomatoes: 95%

Czech director Jan Švankmeier’s adaptation is like a complex stop-motion nightmare. After being disappointed with previous adaptations, which he felt were too fairy tale-like, he set out to create something closer to Carroll’s original vision. The dark and special atmosphere of this animation attracted the attention of critics and in 1989 it won the Annecy International Animation Film Festival award and won an impressive score of 95% in Rotten Tomatoes. Schwenkmayer believes that “Alice in Wonderland” is one of the most important and amazing books in history. The director’s passion for the original source material is evident throughout the film. Overall, a good and unique adaptation of a classic fairy tale that is worth checking out, especially if you’re looking for a darker take on Alice.

1. Alice in Wonderland (1951)

  • Director: Wilfred Jackson
  • Voice actors: Catherine Bowman, Ed Wayne, Sterling Holloway and…
  • IMDB rating of the movie: 7.4 out of 10
  • Movie score in Rotten Tomatoes: 84%

Disney’s animated version of Alice in Wonderland is undoubtedly the most timeless version of Alice. More than seven decades later, the film is a must-see for Carol fans, Disney fans, and all moviegoers in the world. Wonderland would never be as amazing without some of Disney’s most creative visuals and catchy songs. The audience is dragged down the rabbit hole along with Alice and encounters a group of wacky characters. Memorable characters beautifully portrayed and reminding us once again why Disney is the most successful animation studio in the world.
