The city of Jurjan, which is now located three kilometers southwest of Gonbadkavus in the east of Golestan province, was one of the big cities of the Islamic world that had very advanced architecture and urban planning. With the excavations, it was found that more than 1000 years ago, it had urban sewage, streets with brick patterned pavements and a water supply system to the houses.

Valuable pottery and pottery obtained from the burials of Jurjan also prove that this city was one of the centers of pottery and pottery industry in the post-Islamic periods, i.e. 5th and 6th centuries of Hijri. This city was built during the Samanid period on the ruins of a Sasanian city and it was built in an irregular polygon like the cities of the region before Islam.
