The end of Oscar voting / Women on the verge of a big record

Voting from members of the Academy to choose the final nominees for the 96th Academy Awards has ended, while women moviegoers are on the verge of creating a record in the Best Picture category.

Charso Press: With the announcement of the winners of the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, led by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Les Miserables, Alexander Payne’s The Leftovers, and Justin Trier’s Anatomy of a Fall. also had a significant presence among the winners, Oscar Academy members also recorded their final votes on the selection of nominees for these awards.

Previously, the Producers Guild of America nominated three works directed by female filmmakers, including “Anatomy of a Fall”, “Barbie” and “Past Lives”, and if these three films are also nominated in the category of the best film of the Oscars, the record number of female directors in This branch will be broken.

In the history of the Academy Awards, only 19 films by female filmmakers have been nominated for the Academy’s Best Picture category, and in just four years, two films by women have been nominated in the Best Picture category: in 2009 (The Teaching and Heart Locker), 2010 (Hashan’s Children). It’s Good and Bone-Burning Winter), 2020 (The Young Woman of Fire and Land of the Displaced) and 2021 (The Power of the Dog and Cuda). This year is a good opportunity for the films of three female filmmakers to compete for the best film award for the first time.

Another film likely to catch the attention of Academy voters is Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” which appears to be nominated in several categories, including supporting actress (Rosamond Pike), original screenplay, production design, cinematography, and music. The original text has a great chance to reach the 2024 Oscar nominees.

Although the film “The Color Purple” has been praised by critics, it has not been noticed by critics’ associations such as art directors, costume designers, and make-up artists, and it has only one nomination in the Best Ensemble category of the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG). Historically, acting in musicals cannot be the only nomination for a film, and this film needs nominations in other categories to have a chance at the Oscars.

High-profile actors such as Angelina Jolie have voiced their support for Ava DuVernay’s harrowing drama “Origin,” and star Anjano Ellis-Taylor is said to be in for a surprise Oscar nomination. However, based on what the voters are saying, there is a feeling that this film could become the first film since The Ox-Boo Incident (1943) to receive a sole Best Picture nomination.

While the movies “The Leftovers” and “American Stories” have received the most attention in the acting categories, it is not clear which actors can be nominated in the category of supporting male role in the movie “Bachargan”. Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo are two actors in this film who have received different attention from other awards. Only at the Golden Globe Awards were both actors nominated, but the Screen Actors Guild of America ultimately nominated Willem Dafoe and the BAFTA Awards preferred Mark Ruffalo. We have to wait and see if these two actors will make it to the list of Oscar nominees for the best actor in addition to the Academy Awards.

The final nominees for the 2024 Academy Awards will be announced on January 23 (3rd of Bahman), and the final ceremony of the 96th Academy Awards will be held on March 10 (the morning of March 21) at Dolby Hall.
