The European Union has finally announced the date of mandatory use of the USB-C port

In its official journal, the European Union published the “Common Charger Directive”, under which all smartphones, including iPhones, tablets, cameras, headphones, earbuds, handheld game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, mice and keyboards, and portable navigation systems Shipments that are sold in this area must be dated December 28, 2024 (December 8, 1403) Have a USB-C port.

according to New EU DirectiveIf the charging speed of these devices is higher than 15 watts Yes, they must support the USB Power Delivery feature.

Apple should equip iPhones with USB-C

The new EU law affects Apple more than any other company. While many Android companies have gone for the USB-C port for their products, Apple has yet to use this port for iPhones. Of course, all new Apple iPads currently use this port.

We must point out that the new law is only related to wired charging and has nothing to do with wireless charging. So instead of using USB-C, Apple could remove all ports altogether from its future iPhones and just stick to wireless charging. In this case, it does not disobey any law, and of course, it has been a while since the rumors about the possibility of developing such an iPhone.

Although according to the new law, Apple currently has enough time to produce an iPhone with a Lightning port, but according to rumors, from next year, iPhones will also be equipped with a USB-C port. Of course, Apple officially confirmed last month that it will have to comply with the law and USB-C is coming to iPhones.

EU law from 2026, or to be precise from April 28, 2026 (May 8, 1405), targets laptops and they must be equipped with USB-C.

EU member states must publish the rules and regulations related to compliance with the new directive by December 28, 2023 (7 January 1402).
