The first World Congress of Sports Tourism was held


According to Moj News Agency, famous experts and academics active in the field of sports tourism discussed the current and future trends in this field for two days and emphasized the key role of sports for further development of tourism.

The first World Congress of Sport Tourism, held on November 25 and 26 in Yurt Demar, Spain, focused on the sector’s unique capacity to promote sustainable and inclusive development, diversify tourism, and attract public participation. The congress was organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Tourism Agency of Catalonia.

An encouraging issue for this sector of the industry is the gradual return of major sporting events, which is the main driver of the resumption of tourism.

At the opening ceremony, Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, said that holding this congress with the strong presence of participants sends a clear message that the tourism sector is ready to welcome tourists again and the revival of sports tourism plays an important role in This field plays.

“The encouraging example of this is the gradual return of major sporting events, which is the main driver of relaunching tourism,” Polulikashvili added.

There were about 350 participants in this congress and more than 150 people followed the topics in this congress online.

On the first day, the most urgent challenges were discussed, from the impact of Covid-19 and current trends in tourism demand and the tourism market, to trends in sport, innovation in hosting major sporting events, diversity and inclusiveness, and privatization of sport tourism. The second day focused on the digital evolution and e-sports phenomenon, the promotion of digital marketing, the environmental framework and new research in this area.

Working on tourism and sport is a UNWTO priority, especially given the essential improvement of this important part of the tourism industry.
