The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is visiting Beirut, announced on Thursday that Iran is ready to provide economic assistance to Lebanon in the development of the energy sector.
According to Sputnik, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that Iranian companies are ready to build two power plants, one in Beirut and the other in southern Lebanon, within 18 months.
In addition, the Lebanese foreign minister added that Lebanese could benefit from Iran’s experience in rebuilding and equipping seaports, and that Iranian companies would be willing to participate in the reconstruction of the port of Beirut after last year’s explosion, if the Lebanese side so requests.
Abdullahian said that in talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, an agreement was reached on convening an intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation in the near future. He stressed: Iran can help Lebanon in various fields.
Earlier, Lebanese President Michel Aoun received Abdullahian at Baabda Palace and conveyed a message of congratulations to Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. During a meeting with the Iranian foreign minister, Aoun said he “supports Tehran’s diplomatic efforts aimed at getting closer to Arab countries.”
“Iran will spare no effort to support its brother Lebanon, which is facing an unjust economic blockade,” he said.
