The key to currency policy should only be in the hands of the central bank

Majidreza Hariri, in an interview with Iran Economist, referring to the claim of the Chairman of the Parliament’s Economic Commission on the issue of foreign currency from the export of some agricultural products and the currency of car imports and the negative impact of these issues on the foreign exchange market, said: Until now, everyone’s question has been why the Central Bank It is not completely independent from the government and should play a role in assigned affairs as independently as possible; Now, in this situation where everyone is looking for the independence of the Central Bank from the government’s policies, such a claim by the head of the Economic Commission is completely illogical.

The head of the Iran-China Chamber of Commerce emphasized that the Central Bank as the treasurer should be able to make long-term decisions in the currency and monetary affairs of the country regardless of political debates, and said: In fact, the Economic Commission of the Parliament cannot claim that it should intervene or make policies in the currency affairs. It is slow and it seems that this claim is more of a personal campaign and election debate and definitely has no use or economic logic.

He stated: It is the same in the world and central banks operate with complete independence and even independence from governments, although such a goal has not yet been fully achieved in our country, but there is no reason why some people on behalf of the entire parliament make such a claim. Bring up the strange.

Emphasizing that the currency policy and the key to the treasury should be in the hands of a single policymaker, namely the Central Bank, Hariri added: The Parliament has a vote in the Money and Credit Council and also has a seat in the Supreme Economic Council, as a result, it can express its opinions as a member. These sections declare, But in the implementation of the country’s foreign exchange policies, the key to policy making should be in the hands of a single commander, that is, the central bank.

This economic activist continued: My reaction to the statements of the head of the economic commission is not personal in any way, but I believe that in order to express an opinion on behalf of the parliament, a group must be present in that opinion and that issue finally won the majority vote and Then the parliament should announce and raise it, even the speaker of the parliament cannot take an official position in the cases that are still in the form of proposals in the parliament and have not been approved. In fact, the official and main opinion of the parliament is the opinion that everyone has voted for. It has become a law after voting.

According to Fars report, it was on the third day of Mehr that a letter was published by Mohammadreza Pourabrahimi, the head of the economic commission of the parliament, addressed to the president. According to what Pourabrahimi said in his letter, he had recently organized a meeting in the economic commission in order to strengthen the export of agricultural products, especially pistachios. He had also invited the Minister of Economy, the Minister of Jihad Agriculture and the Governor of the Central Bank, however, the Governor of the Central Bank did not participate in this meeting and no representative came to the meeting on his behalf.

After holding this meeting, a news was published in the media with the content that the allocation of foreign exchange resulting from the export of agricultural products to the import of cars has been agreed upon. According to some informants, Farzin’s absence in the meeting and his denial of the said news caused the chairman of the Parliament’s Economic Commission to write a letter to the President while questioning Farzin’s performance at the Central Bank and demanding that the President deal with him.
