According to Mehr news agency, quoted by Sputnik news agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov announced in a speech today that the quadrilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, Turkey and Syria is being investigated and prepared.
In an interview with the Sputnik news agency, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia said that the possibility of holding a meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, Syria and Russia to establish possible agreements between Ankara and Damascus and to improve the situation in West Asia is under consideration.
“Mikhail Bogdanov” continued in this regard: “Iran has also expressed its desire to join the negotiation process… The manner of holding a quadrilateral meeting at the level of foreign ministers is currently being considered.” We all have a common goal to resolve the situation around Syria and try to stabilize the situation in the region (West Asia).
He further added that the current contacts of the security forces and diplomats were supposed to provide conditions for the negotiations between Syria and Turkey, which may provide the basis for possible agreements.
According to Sputnik, in 2017, Iran, Russia and Turkey launched a mediation group to resolve Syrian issues in the city of Astana.
In January 2018, the Russian city of Sochi hosted the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which was the first attempt since the start of the conflict to bring together a comprehensive set of Syrian political forces. The main result of the congress was the decision to create a constitutional committee, which operates in Geneva, and whose main task is to prepare a constitutional amendment in Syria.
In December 2022, the defense ministers of Russia, Syria and Turkey held tripartite talks in Moscow to explore ways to resolve the Syrian crisis. These talks were the first official meeting between the defense ministers of Turkey and Syria in the last 11 years. In the same month, Ankara proposed that the foreign ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia hold a meeting in February 2023, possibly in a third country.
