The most luxurious American car produced in Iran + photo

According to the online economy report, quoted by Khabar Online; Cadillac Seville, which was once assembled in Iran, was a symbol of luxury in the country before the 1957 revolution. General Motors cooperated with an Iranian company to build this sedan. General Motors sold this model to Iranian customers for 2.5 times its price in America.

At first glance, the Seville, with its boxy body and wooden interior, may not seem like an attractive classic car. However, at a time when American buyers were looking for smaller European luxury cars, this model was a big change for Cadillac. Cadillac was mostly known for its large and expensive cars in the past. Seville’s low fuel consumption and handling had attracted the attention of customers.

Cadillac Seville uses a powerful V8 injection engine, comfortable cabin, electric seats and automatic door and window locks. The base model Seville was sold for $12,479 when it was first released in 1975, which is equivalent to more than $70,000 today. General Motors produced nearly 57,000 Sevilles in 1978 alone.

At that time, Iran had the only Cadillac production plant outside the United States. The brand founded General Motors of Iran, which produced the Seville and other vehicles from kits shipped from Detroit. Cadillac Seville was the most luxurious road car assembled in Iran, under the supervision of American engineers.

At the time of its introduction, Seville had a price of about 35 thousand dollars, which was more than the amount paid by American customers, and part of it was higher due to import duties.

According to a New York Times report in 1977, a General Motors official said about Iranians: “As soon as they have money, they buy a pair of Levi’s and a car.”
