The new ambassador of Tunisia was appointed in Syria

According to the report of the international group of Fars news agency, following the process of resuming relations between Arab countries and the Syrian regime, Tunisia officially announced this Thursday afternoon that it has appointed a new ambassador in Damascus.

Al Jazeera news channel reported that the President of Tunisia, Qais Saeed, appointed Mohamed Al-Mahzabi as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of this country to Syria.

Al-Mahdabi has been elected as Tunisia’s ambassador to Syria, as he has a long history in the Tunisian diplomatic system. In 2021, he was previously appointed as the Minister of Probation, which is the highest position in the diplomatic system of this country. He was the Tunisian consul in Munich, Germany from 2006 to 2011.

Earlier, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Maqdad visited Tunisian President Qais Said at the end of April last month and delivered the message of President Bashar al-Assad to his Tunisian counterpart.

Al-Maqdad said in this meeting: Syria is happy to establish bilateral relations with Tunisia and return it to its correct and normal path. Syria appreciates the support of the President of Tunisia in the war against terrorism and emphasizes the importance of strengthening the relations between the two countries and considers it to benefit its nations.

Diplomatic relations between Syria and Tunisia were severed on February 4, 2012, during the presidency of the former Tunisian president Al-Monsef al-Marzouki. In a statement, al-Marzooqi announced the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador and the non-recognition of Bashar Assad’s government and asked the president of this country to resign from his position.

While expressing his satisfaction with the expansion of relations between the two countries, the Tunisian President wished progress and prosperity for Syria and said: Syria has achieved many things in the war against terrorism and has been able to maintain its sovereignty against conspiracies.

He also appreciates the developments and openings in Syria’s relations with other Arab countries. Al-Maqdad also said that Bashar al-Assad emphasized that all Arab countries should do their best to support their just issues.

Syria and Tunisia also announced on the 23rd of April in a joint statement that in response to the Tunisian president’s initiative to appoint his country’s ambassador in Damascus, Syria also intends to reopen its embassy in Tunisia and appoint an ambassador for it (more details).
