The new President of Armenia took office


The new president of Armenia was sworn in in the parliament on Sunday afternoon, Tehran time, according to Fars News Agency.

According to the Interfax news agency, Armenian President-elect Vahagen Khachaturian was sworn in at a special session of parliament on Sunday and took office. Representatives of the ruling party, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, attended the inauguration ceremony.

Khachaturian was elected president on March 3 (Thursday, March 4) in the second round of parliamentary elections. He was the only candidate and the opposition boycotted the elections. Representatives of the parliamentary opposition also did not attend the inauguration ceremony. Armenia is a parliamentary republic in which the parliament elects the president.

Khachaturian served as mayor of Yerevan from 1992-1996, and as an adviser to the president from 1998-1999. He also served as the Minister of Advanced Technology Industry of Armenia for some time.

Armenian President Armen Sargsyan recently resigned. A message posted on the Armenian president’s website reads: “I thought for a long time and after almost four years of active work I decided to resign from the post of President of Armenia. “It’s absolutely not an emotional decision and it comes from a certain logic.”

Sarkisian had said that the president did not have the necessary tools to influence the basic processes of domestic and foreign policy in the current difficult period for the country and the nation. Armen Sarkisian assumed the presidency of Armenia on April 9, 2018.
