Alisha Citadel is one of the oldest citadels in the country and in ancient times it was the only tall building in Tabriz that could be seen from outside the city. This beautiful building is about 31 meters high and 30.15 meters wide, with a cylindrical arch beyond it. Once upon a time, the ramparts of this castle were the constitutional headquarters of the Chis and were known as a symbol of the city’s resistance, and in the Qajar period, it was also a barracks. Of course, the first use of the Alisha citadel was as a mosque, but later and during the Qajar era, it was used as a grain store and an ammunition store. Unfortunately, successive and severe earthquakes in Tabriz destroyed a large part of this citadel and today only one wall remains, but this wall also represents the glory of this unique building.

The construction of Alisha Citadel started in 716 AH during the reign of Mohammad Khodabande (Tajuddin Alisha Jilani) and was completed in 724 AH. And Islamic buildings are rare.

Alishah Citadel is one of the highest historical walls in the country, which is located on the south side of the intersection of Imam Khomeini and Ferdowsi Streets, and the Tabriz Grand Mosque was built in this place.
This huge building has been partially destroyed due to the many earthquakes of the last 400 years, in the passage of time and also at the beginning of the revolution.
Today, only a part of the huge walls and the very tall altar of the southern nave of this mosque is left, which is a proof of its glory and prosperity in the past, and the existing walls actually formed a huge cylindrical arched porch and portico that created a space. It is considered as the nativity scene and the main element of the Alisha Mosque.

This year, 11,000 people visited the Alisha Citadel in Tabriz
The Deputy Director of Tourism of the General Department of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts of East Azarbaijan also stated in an interview with IRNA reporter: Cylindrical arch is known as more than fractional arch. Its height is 31 meters, its width is 30.15 meters, its thickness is 10.40 meters, and the foundations are deep and massive according to the above structures.
On average, more than eleven thousand domestic and foreign tourists visited the citadel during the Nowruz holiday this year.
Alireza Bayramzadeh continued: 2 tourist guides are stationed in this place, who answer tourists’ questions from 9:00 AM until after Maghrib Azan and guide Nowruz guests.
Stating that this historical work is related to the 8th century AH, he said: Alishah Citadel is one of the places located in the center of Tabriz and is of interest to tourists.
Bayramzadeh added: Of course, visiting this place does not sell tickets. It is free, that’s why it is not included in the ranking of the number of visitors to historical monuments.
The Tabriz citadel and its ancient site have been registered as number 170 in the list of national monuments of Iran on January 15, 1310. The map of the legal protection zone and its protection criteria have been determined and approved by the members in the meeting of 29 June 1357 of the Council for the Protection of Historical Monuments of the General Administration of Historical Monuments Protection.
