The supply of imported rice continues at the approved rate to regulate the market

According to Fars News Agency, quoting the Ministry of Jihad Agriculture, Hojjat Baratali stated: According to the approval of the Agricultural Market Regulation Headquarters and with the aim of reducing the price of imported rice, 150,000 tons of rice was started three months ago at the approved rate, of which 120,000 tons were absorbed. And the sale of another 30,000 tons continues.
He added: 30,000 tons of foreign rice, including Indian rice at a price of 18,500 Tomans per kilo, Pakistani rice at a price of 20,500 Tomans per kilo and Thai rice at a price of 12,500 Tomans per kilo through national distribution networks. It is distributed to all chain stores, nationwide urban and rural cooperatives, as well as through the provincial market regulation headquarters.
The Director General of the Coordination Office of Distribution and Sales of Iran State Trading Company announced the annual consumption of rice in the country about 3 million and 200 thousand tons and said: The initial forecast of the Ministry of Jihad for Agriculture was about 2 million tons of rice production this year. Due to the decrease in rainfall and drought, it decreased by 18% and domestic production reached 1.8 million tons, so the country’s need to import rice this year is about 1.4 million tons.
He added: “According to the approvals of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran State Commercial Services Company is responsible for providing 600,000 tons of rice for the country’s strategic reserves.”
Baratali continued: “Due to the increase in prices in previous months, with the aim of regulating the rice market, in the first phase, 100,000 tons of imported rice were distributed in the country from the beginning of September, and in the next phase, another 50,000 tons were introduced to the market in mid-October.” As a result, according to the official reports of the Organization for the Protection of Consumers and Producers, the price of rice in the market decreased, and in Indian rice we saw a 100% decrease in price, and Thai and Pakistani rice also saw a decrease in price.
The Director General of the Distribution and Sales Coordination Office of the State Trading Company of Iran said that the reason for the increase in the price of imported rice in recent months was the decrease in the registration of import orders for this product by the private sector and importers of this product based on the information order registration system. Elimination of the preferential exchange rate for rice imports in the past year and a half and importing with half currency The private sector did not register much order for rice imports this year because due to the increase in the cost price of foreign rice, the market elasticity is less than this rice. The level of elasticity of domestic market demand has been more limited than that of foreign rice.
Baratali also announced the presence of the government in this market until the relative stability of the rice price is achieved and added: if necessary, in addition to this 150,000 tons, we will send more rice to the market.
