The weightlifting crisis has hit the IWF again

According to Fars News Agency, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) again violated the rules of the new statute that was approved this summer. Interim IWF President Mike Irani spoke of a bright future when the constitution was approved by Congress nine months ago.

When the constitution was amended in the New Year with a special congress, Mike Irani welcomed it as a sign of “culture change” in a sport plagued by doping and corruption scandals.

The interim president of the World Weightlifting Federation noted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has described the federation as a troubled child, reduced its athletes’ quota for the Paris Olympics and conditionally removed weightlifting from the 2028 Los Angeles Games schedule.

Despite talks by Mike Irani, he has not been able to fulfill the duties assigned to him by the interim chairman. A long list of questions about his behavior was sent to Mohammad Jaloud, Secretary General of the World Federation. Most of the questions raised are related to the lack of transparency regarding finances. The World Weightlifting Federation has not had any financial audits in the last two years, and the last audit is for 2019.

There are also concerns about a potential conflict of interest over the election of a member of the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission. The rules in the articles of association specify what members must do and what level of communication and information they have.
