According to Tasnim news agency and quoted by “Guardian”; The Crown Prosecution Service has officially cleared former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood of rape charges.
This accusation was made against Greenwood last year and the 21-year-old player was arrested in January 2022. He, who once played for the English national team, denied the charges against him and was ready to appear in court, where he was acquitted by the prosecutor’s verdict.
The spokesperson of the British Crown Prosecution Service said: We are obliged to review all cases continuously. The recantation of key witnesses and the new revelations about the case show that there is no longer a true view of the conviction.
He further stated: In this situation, we have a duty to stop the case and we have explained our decision to all parties of the case. We encourage potential victims to report to the police and we will prosecute when a legal investigation is carried out.
Last year, Greenwood’s fiance published pictures of his bloodied face and bruised body and of course an audio file of the player’s inappropriate comments on the internet, which had a wide impact. Greenwood was accused of beating his fiancee and was arrested for that reason.
After Greenwood’s arrest, the English striker’s teammates unfollowed the player on social networks, and Nike, his sponsor, suspended its cooperation with him. Also, Manchester United collected Greenwood shirts from their stores and stopped selling them.
