Throne: Cultural property is not subject to unilateral coercive measures



According to IRNA, Dr. Majid Takht Ravanchi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, praised UNESCO’s role in preventing the smuggling of cultural property at the UN General Assembly on Monday, local time, to approve a resolution on the return of cultural property to countries of origin. He stressed the need to increase the institution’s efforts to assist in the return of cultural property.
The most senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: “Cultural property reflects the history, civilization and identity of their countries and its ownership by the people of those countries is a human right.”

He added: “Therefore, the international community has a shared responsibility as well as a legal and moral obligation to preserve them, including guaranteeing their return to their countries of origin.” This commitment goes beyond existing international treaties and the countries surrounding these treaties.

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations stated: “Therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the 1970 Convention on the Means of Preventing the Illegal Transfer, Export and Transfer of Cultural Property will never legitimize the transfer of cultural property.” On the other hand, it does not absolve the member states of this convention from the obligation to return stolen or illegally removed cultural property before the entry into force of this convention.

Takht-e Ravanchi said that the Islamic Republic of Iran believes that this convention should be taken into account in light of the developments and the inhuman, immoral and illegal nature of the transfers made during the period when the countries of origin were under colonialism or foreign political influence. Their rulers were not aware of the cultural value of their monuments, let it be updated.

The Iranian ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran also believes that due to the nature of this cultural property, which is the common heritage of humanity, they can not be subject to unilateral coercive measures and other executive measures.”

Takht-e Ravanchi said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran also expresses its satisfaction with the inclusion of the Iranian delegation to the UN in the resolution adopted by the Assembly to prevent the financing of terrorism through the smuggling of cultural property and the need to return the said cultural property to countries of origin.” کرد.

The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations also warned the international community against illegal excavations under the Al-Aqsa Mosque by the Zionist regime, saying that the continuation of this process, which will lead to the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, will threaten international peace and security.

The Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran also proposed the formation of a working group with the participation of the countries of the Assembly of Ancient Civilizations as well as the countries of origin of cultural property, whose main task is to create a joint action plan to restore cultural property.

Takht-e Ravanchi also announced Iran’s readiness to cooperate in order to preserve and care for the relics of Iranian civilization in neighboring countries.

The resolution on the return of cultural property to the countries of origin was adopted by consensus at the UN General Assembly on Monday, local time.

About 100 countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, have been the founders of this resolution. The negative point of this resolution is that it did not precede us.

The resolution commends member states, cultural and educational institutions, museums and civil society for their efforts to combat illicit trade and smuggling of cultural property, and for all initiatives taken by governments, institutions or individuals to voluntarily return cultural property.
