UN envoy: Extension of Yemeni ceasefire is first step


According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, Hans Grundberg, the UN envoy for Yemen, told AFP that the two-month extension of the ceasefire in Yemen gave people hope that the situation in the country would return to normal.

Hans Grundberg announced after the deadline for the ceasefire that the parties involved in Yemen had agreed to the same terms as the original agreement and that the ceasefire would be extended for another two months.

Saudi Arabia, at the head of an Arab coalition backed by the United States, invaded Yemen on April 26, 2015, claiming that it was trying to bring the resigned Yemeni president back to power, and imposed a land, air and sea blockade on the country.

The military aggression did not achieve any of the goals of the Saudi coalition and only led to the killing and wounding of tens of thousands of Yemenis, the displacement of millions, the destruction of the country’s infrastructure, the spread of famine, famine and infectious diseases.
