United Nations: More than one million residential houses have been damaged in Pakistan floods

The United Nations Spokesperson’s Office announced on Friday local time that about half a million flood victims are living in tents.

More than 5 thousand kilometers of roads and 243 bridges have been destroyed or damaged due to floods in Pakistan.

Also, according to the UNICEF report, it is estimated that more than 16 million Pakistani children have been affected by the flood and at least 18 thousand schools have been destroyed or damaged.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 30 million Pakistanis have been affected by the torrential rains and flooding across the country, and 6.4 million of them are in need of immediate assistance.

The agency added: Since June, flooding has forced hundreds of thousands of local people to leave their homes. Some of them have moved to camps or to other families.

In response to the Pakistani government’s request for assistance, the United Nations Refugee Agency requested to provide 160 million dollars for relief costs to Pakistani flood victims.

This amount is supposed to be used to provide the necessities of about 5 million victims of the recent floods in Pakistan.

Pakistan is facing the worst flood caused by rain in its history, so far more than 1,000 people have been killed and 1,500 injured.

Referring to the recent floods in Pakistan, the United Nations spokesperson warned about the possibility of worsening the situation in this country if the rains continue.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is going to visit this country to investigate the consequences of the devastating flood in Pakistan and express his sympathy to the people and the victims.

According to IRNA news agency of India, this flood has affected more than 5.7 million people. Currently, 498,442 people are staying in relief camps across the country.
