US lawmakers plan to expel Russia from Security Council

According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, the US Congress has introduced a resolution intending to expel Russia from the UN Security Council for launching military operations against Ukraine.

The resolution, a copy of which has reached Axis, requires the United Nations to take the “regulatory action” necessary to amend paragraph 23 of its charter to remove Russia from its permanent membership.

The resolution referred to Russia’s “invasion of Ukraine” as stating that Moscow’s support for the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk was a serious threat to international peace and security, and contradicted Russia’s role as a permanent member of the Security Council.

The bill was introduced by Claudia Toni, a Republican member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Nick Stewart, head of the Office of the Senior Congressman, has said that removing Russia from the Security Council is an ambitious goal, but that the plan could increase pressure on Moscow. He said the plan was designed to send a message to Russia.

Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on Thursday morning (February 24th). This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine.

Russia says Ukraine has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk agreements reached in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the dispute between separatists and Kiev. Vladimir Putin says Russia’s military operation is aimed at demilitarizing Ukraine and “de-Naziizing” it.

Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia on several occasions in response to Russia’s military action in Ukraine. European countries are currently considering cutting off Russia’s access to Swift’s banking messaging system.
