Washington: Ukraine’s membership in NATO must be agreed upon by all members

According to Fars International News Agency, despite Russia’s repeated warnings about new countries joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), America once again supported the expansion of this military alliance.

John Kirby, the coordinator of strategic communications at the National Security Council of the White House, said on Monday evening that America supports the open door policy for new countries to join the NATO alliance.

Previously, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky once again demanded that Ukraine join NATO and asked this military alliance to provide security guarantees to Kiev if membership is not possible in the current situation.

According to “Sputnik” news agency, during a press conference in the White House, in response to a question about Ukraine’s membership in NATO, Kirby also explained that this should be done with the participation and consent of 31 member countries of this alliance.

He also added that the statement approved at the end of the NATO summit in 2022 in Bucharest included the concept that Ukraine will have the opportunity to join this alliance in the future.

The repetition of America’s support for the expansion of NATO after Finland’s membership in this military alliance is done in a situation where Russia has repeatedly warned the West about this issue and called Ukraine’s accession to NATO a red line.

In another part of his speech, this American official once again repeated China’s claim of using Cuban soil to spy on Washington and said that America has informed Havana of its concerns about hosting spies from Beijing.

According to the Reuters news agency, Kirby said that bilateral relations with China are currently tense, but US President Joe Biden is committed to keeping the lines of communication open.

US officials had previously claimed that Beijing and Havana had signed an agreement to build an electronic eavesdropping facility in Cuba that would be used to spy on the US.

Kirby also added that he does not expect recent reports about a Chinese spy base in Cuba to affect Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s planned visit to Beijing later this week.

However, China’s Foreign Ministry rejected Washington’s claim that Beijing is using Cuban soil to spy on the country, saying that America is more specialized in spying and interfering in the affairs of other countries. (More details)
