Ursodiol helps dissolve cholesterol gallstones by reducing cholesterol in bile. These stones are the most common type of gallstones and are made of cholesterol. Ursodiol is usually prescribed for gallstones less than 20 mm in diameter. Some uses include dissolution of cholesterol gallstones, treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and prevention of gallstone formation in obese individuals undergoing rapid weight loss.
