Which countries have supported the lawsuit against Israel at the Hague Court?
According to the online economy report, quoted by Fars, the “International Court of Justice” is scheduled to hold the first hearing on Thursday to deal with South Africa’s complaint against Israel for the genocide in Gaza.
A few weeks ago, South Africa filed a petition with this court based in The Hague, demanding to investigate Israel’s accusation of committing genocide in the Gaza war.
In this 84-page complaint, South Africa states that Israel has violated the provisions of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Both Israel and South Africa are signatories to the convention, which authorizes the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice as the UN’s highest legal authority to handle disputes.
All parties who have signed this treaty have pledged not to commit genocide and to prevent and punish it by other parties. Genocide is defined in this treaty as “committing acts with the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group”.
South Africa supported this complaint to all countries that are critical of Israel’s operation in Gaza and to hold this regime accountable for the killing of Palestinians.
Which countries have supported this complaint?
Organization of Islamic Cooperation. This organization consists of 57 countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Morocco. Shortly after South Africa’s complaint, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation praised the country’s action and emphasized that Israel’s actions, including targeting civilians, including women and children, forcibly displacing Palestinian citizens and depriving them of basic needs, preventing the arrival of health aid and the destruction of health and educational centers are examples of genocide.
Malaysia. Last week, the Malaysian government welcomed South Africa’s complaint and considered this action a “concrete step” in order to make this regime accountable for its crimes.
While supporting the formation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, Malaysia asked the Zionist regime to fulfill its duties according to international laws and immediately end its crimes against the Palestinians.
Türkiye. The spokesperson of the Turkish Foreign Ministry supported South Africa’s action on Monday last week. Türkiye emphasized that Israel’s crime should not go unpunished.
Jordan. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi said on Sunday that he supports South Africa in this legal case. Ayman al-Safadi said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan is trying to prepare the necessary legal file for follow-up and coordination with Arab and Islamic countries.
Bolivia. On Sunday, Bolivia’s foreign ministry hailed South Africa’s move as historic, becoming the first Latin American country to support South Africa at the Hague Tribunal.
In addition to countries, many political activists and civil organizations around the world have supported South Africa’s request to hold Israel accountable. Yesterday, it was reported that about 400 Jewish activists living in occupied Palestine signed a petition in support of South Africa’s complaint.
Opponents of the South African complaint
The United States, as always, opposes holding Israel accountable. John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council of the White House, claimed that South Africa’s complaint is “worthless, unconstructive and completely baseless.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reiterated their opposition to the lawsuit on Tuesday, and Herzog thanked Washington for its support for Tel Aviv.
