Writers’ Association did not fall short/Tony ceremony will not be broadcast

After the Writers Guild of America refused to call off the strike, it was announced that the Tony Awards would not be televised.

Charso Press: According to Variety, the 2023 Tony Awards ceremony will not be televised on June 11 because the Writers Guild refused to accept a request to cancel the strike to prepare the ceremony.

The Tony Awards Committee is scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss how the event will be held.

It is said that the request to cancel the strike was given to the writers’ association early last week.

This year, Arina Deboz was supposed to return as the presenter of the ceremony, but it is believed that if the strike continues, she will also refuse to attend the ceremony.

The Tony Awards were to be held in New York and broadcast live on CBS.

Although the audience for the Tony Awards has decreased significantly in recent years, the broadcast of the event serves as an incentive for Broadway, increasing ticket sales and welcoming theater tours. The Broadway show industry is struggling after the pandemic coronavirus that destroyed live theater shows, stand on their feet again.

This year’s Tony nominations were announced about 2 weeks ago, and “Some Like It Hot” led the shows of the year in terms of nominations with 13 nominations, including Best Musical.

“Shock” and “Juliet” were also nominated for Tony in 9 categories each, followed by “Kimberly Akinbo” with 8 nominations. The revival of the show “A Doll’s House” starring Jessica Chastain and Tom Stoppard’s “Leopold Stadt” and the political satire “No Hair” were also nominated in 8 categories each.

At the time of announcing the names of the candidates, it was predicted that the writers’ strike would prevent the writing of the texts of the Tony Awards ceremony.
