AMD Ryzen 7000 laptop processors are introduced – a combination of four generations of Zen architecture!

During the CES 2023 event, AMD has also unveiled Ryzen 7000 laptop processors, along with other new products.
Ryzen 7000 laptop processors, from Zen 2 to Zen 4!
You might think that since Ryzen 7000 desktop processors were based on the Zen 4 architecture, then their laptop versions should also be based on the same architecture, but this is not the case. Ryzen 7000 laptop processors are based on four different architectures: Zen 3, Zen 3+, Zen 2 and finally Zen 4. Even the internal graphics of all these processors are not based on the latest AMD graphics architecture, and their internal graphics are based on three generations of Vega architecture, RDNA 2 and RDNA 3.

The most attractive processors introduced by AMD are the Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range series processors and the Ryzen 7040 Phoenix series processors, which use Zen 4 architecture and RDNA 2/3 graphics architectures for both series. The Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range series processors have been developed for high-end gaming laptops and the Ryzen 7040 Phoenix series processors have been developed for high-end light laptops, and we will discuss the models and features of each.
Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range laptop processors

First, we start with the Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range processors as the main competitors of Intel’s Core HX processors. These processors, which are used in high-end gaming and content production laptops, are based on the Zen 4 architecture and have the largest number of cores and threads among AMD laptop processors so far. AMD company offers four processor models under this series:
- Ryzen 9 7945HX processor (Number of cores/threads: 16/32)
- Ryzen 9 7845HX processor (Number of cores/threads: 12/24)
- Ryzen 7 7745HX processor (Number of cores/threads: 8/16)
- Ryzen 5 7645HX processor (Number of cores/threads: 6/12)

The thermal power of these processors is stated to be 45 to 75 watts. These processors support DDR5 memory and have RNDA 2 internal graphics. Regarding technical performance, the new Ryzen 9 7945HX processor offers up to 18% improvement in single-core performance, up to 78% improvement in multi-core performance and up to 62% improvement in gaming performance compared to the previous generation Ryzen 9 6900HX processor.
Ryzen 7040 Phoenix laptop processors

It’s time for Ryzen 7040 Phoenix series processors. These processors are also based on the Zen 4 architecture, just like the Dragon Range series processors, but with the difference that they focus on establishing a balance between optimal energy consumption and pure processing power. The reason for this is that these processors have been developed for use in light professional laptops, and for this reason, they are equipped with the new generation of RDNA 3 internal graphics, and you can even count on them for light gaming. AMD has three processor models under This series offers:
- Ryzen 9 7940HS processor (Number of cores/threads: 8/16)
- Ryzen 7 7840HS processor (Number of cores/threads: 8/16)
- Ryzen 5 7640HS processor (Number of cores/threads: 6/12)

The thermal power of these processors is stated to be 45 to 75 watts. These processors support DDR5 and LPDDR5 memories and, as we said, have RNDA 3 internal graphics. We don’t know much about the technical performance of these processors compared to the previous generation, but AMD’s previous generation APUs with the internal RDNA 2 graphics shined very well and were widely used in handheld gaming consoles; So we can expect brighter performance for Phoenix APUs with RDNA 3 internal graphics.
The first laptops equipped with Ryzen 7000 Dragon Range / Phoenix processors will hit the market in the first half of 2023 – most likely around March.
