According to Fars News Agency’s police reporter, Colonel Hamid Hamidi, Chief Sheriff of the Highway Police of the Tehran Traffic Police, pointed out the state of accidents on the capital’s highways in the TV program “Safe City” and said: Out of the total number of accidents that occurred on the highways in 1401, about 84% were damages. 15% were injured and less than 1% were fatal.
He added: 21% of accidents occurred at night and about 79% of accidents occurred during the day. Although the severity of accidents at night has been much higher and heavier than during the day; Also, most of the accidents involving injuries and deaths on the highways have happened at night, which can be caused by the silence of the roads and high speed.
Col. Hamidi said: Regarding the negligence of vehicles, the riders have the first rank and the second rank belongs to the vans, and in 1500 of the 1401 accidents, these vans were found guilty. The third rank of this statistic is related to trucks and tractors, and the fourth rank goes to motorcycles.
The Chief Sheriff of the Highways Police of the Greater Tehran Traffic Police said: The axes and highways that had the most accidents in 1401 were Azadegan Highway, Imam Ali (AS) and Shahid Yasini Highways, respectively, and the most important and main causes of accidents on the highways are the lack of attention to the front. It can be said that half of the causes of accidents include about 49%.
Colonel Hamidi said: Last year, 16% of accidents were due to failure to observe the distance, 15% due to sudden change of direction, 5% due to inability to control the vehicle, and 15% due to other causes.
The Chief Sheriff of the Highways Police of the Greater Tehran Highway Police stated: Talking on a cell phone, talking to passengers while driving, eating and drinking, and smoking can be examples of not paying attention to the front.
Colonel Hamidi said: There are various reasons for stopping on the highways, including vehicle technical defects, picking up and dropping off passengers, and talking on cell phones. Of course, the problem of talking on a cell phone while driving is seen everywhere and plays a role in most accidents.
He added: The driver stopped on the highway in an unsafe place and started talking on the mobile phone, and this action caused the accident.
The Chief Sheriff of the Highways Police of the Greater Tehran Highway Police said: When passengers suddenly open the door of the car, it can cause accidents, which was the cause of 110 accidents last year. It was that 40% of these 110 accidents resulted in death.
He added: The police advice to the drivers is that they should not stop on the side of the highways and do not go on the highway lanes because these lanes are emergency lanes and are not for stopping and moving and are the traffic areas of emergency vehicles.
Col. Hamidi said: Reversing on the highways can have various causes, such as defective signs or driver distraction, or using mobile phones and talking to passengers, each of which has its own risks.
He added: Another one of these cases is the driver’s lack of familiarity with the road, and in this regard, the use of route finders before departure can be mentioned, so that the driver can determine his route carefully and precisely in this way.
Colonel Hamidi said: “Last year, we had 406 accidents due to driving in reverse gear on highways in Tehran, 80 of which resulted in injuries and deaths.”
The Chief Sheriff of the Highways Police of the Greater Tehran Highway Police said: “The rest of the accidents that happened resulted in very severe damages because reverse gear accidents are like horn-to-horn accidents and the process of two forces is very high, which leads to very high damages and injuries.”
