The Saudi Foreign Minister stated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is not currently considering resuming relations with Syria.

According to Sputnik, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan spoke to CNBC about whether Saudi Arabia, like some of the governments that have re-established contact with the Syrian Republic, is considering establishing relations with Bashar al-Assad. “Saudi Arabia is not thinking about this at the moment,” he said.

Ibn Farhan added: “Riyadh supports the political process between the Syrian government and the opposition, which is being carried out in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations, and calls for security and support for what is in the interests of the Syrian people.”

Following the start of the civil war in Syria, Riyadh expelled its ambassador from Damascus in 2011 and severed diplomatic relations with the country. After that, other countries of the Persian Gulf Council followed in the footsteps of Saudi Arabia; But in 2018, the UAE and Bahrain reopened their embassies in Damascus at the staff level.

In October 2020, Oman returned its ambassador to Damascus and became the first country in the Persian Gulf to open a diplomatic mission at the ambassadorial level in Damascus.
