But what if protecting children from violent movies and TV series / another alarm for parents?

Family group – Zohreh Saeedi: A number of poor and indebted people are put in a competitive situation due to a game, and all but one are killed. The violent scenes of these people being killed with arrows, guns and pistols, the removal of their limbs and their smuggling, the violent scenes of dying and finally nothing that does not take the audience by the hand, are the things that are compounded in the Korean TV series These days, it can be seen in all cyberspace for free, and especially in Iranian domestic platforms such as “Namava” and “Filmio”.

I recently attended a party and children and teenagers were talking to each other, shouting loudly, you saw the Korean series of compound games, and everyone approved, and happily the various scenes of being killed and dying. People were complimenting each other, and I was amazed at how happy these kids were to see these scenes and how happy they were to talk about violence. These are changes in the tastes of children and adolescents who should watch movies with rich story and educational content appropriate to their age, but will not this adolescent suffer from various problems? What is the role of parents in this?

The Washington Post recently wrote in a report that despite the popularity of “Composite Game,” repeated video violence, complete nudity, and recurring obscenities in the first season should have given parents a stern warning to stop and prevent their children from watching the series. !

Reports of Netflix extending Squid Game for the second season have also raised media concerns about the impact of the Korean series on American children. Media observers said they had found children across the country who survived starvation-style survival scenarios; They imitate dystopian shows, dress up like Halloween characters in the series, and watch the most violent clips on TickTock and YouTube.

According to the Washington Times, Melissa Hanson, program director of the Television, Media and Parents Council, said the Los Angeles-based parenting team has asked Netflix to ensure that the popular comedy series is not released to children.

According to a television programmer, consuming violent media content in childhood does more harm than most parents think. What may be considered entertainment for adults may be terrifying to a child. Children imitate what they see, they do not have the ability of the brain to filter out destructive effects.

Leaving aside the mere discussion of this series, and it is very unfortunate that Iranian platforms also broadcast it, there have been many of these cases in the past and will be in the future, but how should families protect their children against this? Prevent violent movies and series so that children do not get into trouble?

Due to the lack of national internet in the country, Saeed Modarresi, a media literacy teacher, recently released an educational video to families to teach them how to restrict some items and sites to protect their children. “There are settings in browsers, for example in Google browser, if you go to browser settings, there is a section called safety search (safety.google) which, if checked, will automatically filter out immoral content and allow it to load on your system. “It does not.”

According to the FATA Police Information Database, parents can first go to the Google browser site and select Search Settings from the Settings section at the bottom right of the page. Then on the Search Settings page, enable the Turn on SafeSearch option. By doing this, the artificial intelligence used in Google search engine will automatically remove the inappropriate content from the search result and will not show them to the user.

But certainly not many movies and series are included in this filtering, so it is recommended that we give the necessary training to children with supervision.

* 41% of children are interested in crime and thriller movies and series!

According to research, 8.5% of the scenes in movies and TV series shown on Iranian television have violent content. Also, children watch TV for more than 4 hours a day, 60% of them watch TV from 9 to 10 pm, which is often the time for movies and series, and 21% of them watch exciting and scary subjects, and 20% of them watch detective stories. They are interested in crime. Some of the violent cartoons that are popular with children today are: Scooby Doo, Ninja Turtles, Sponge Bob, Spider-Man, Kung Fu Panda and Ice Age.

Now imagine that these are programs that are broadcast on national television itself, add cyberspace and other foreign and violent movies and series and its killings and killings to this statistic that is now available to everyone.

Based on 20 years of laboratory research, field experiments, and analysis of behaviors that occur naturally, researchers have concluded that violent television scenes have a definite negative effect on the behaviors and beliefs of children and young adults. I announced this statistic because parents who spend hours watching their children on TV or handing out unfiltered internet to their laptops or tablets for their own comfort and to get things done, without any Be observant, be aware of what they are seeing and hearing.

** How children are affected by violent TV content

Watching content with repetitive violence first alleviates children’s sensitivity to violence, as in the example above when talking about child and adolescent violence in the Combined Game series, which makes aggressive behaviors seem natural. These children usually resort to violence and aggressive behaviors at school or at home.

Fear, insecurity and mistrust are also reinforced in these children. Usually, such children, who watch violent scenes, are worried that they will become victims in those situations. This deprives them of security and causes them problems. Watching this violence, especially for children under the age of eight, causes irreparable mental and physical damage because they cannot discern reality and see the world as a dangerous place.

Another effect of role modeling on children is these violent behaviors. When these valves are opened to children, we will naturally see masculine crimes, belittling adults, and devaluing values. Such behavior, according to psychologists, is children’s response to the violence of the outside world.

These behaviors manifest in childhood in the form of disorder, lying, running away from school, home, insomnia, arousal, violence and clenching of teeth and defensive states, as well as violation of the rights of others.

** How about parental supervision?

It is stated in the verse of the Holy Quran: “Command your family (wife and children) to pray and be patient with it.” Or it is stated in another verse: When Loghman said to his son, while advising him: O my son! “Give polytheism to God, for polytheism is indeed a great oppression.”

Parenting is like supervising children. So, first of all, parents should not watch such movies and series in front of their children, which have aggressive and violent behaviors, and then invite their children to watch relaxing movies and TV series, artistic and cultural activities, and interesting family games. .

If a situation arises and your child watches such traumatic content, it is better to tell him that this is a false story and teach him the difference between reality and fantasy. In simple language, you can explain these technologies to the child.

So watch the cartoons, movies and series that kids watch. Describe and specify the appropriate type of content for them. Limit time watching TV or using laptops and tablets. Never allow them to watch violent series when choosing between sleeping and sleeping time and night. Teach children to read story books at bedtime.

If your child asks questions about the death or murder of a character in a movie or series, remind him that the actor is not dead and was just a play. If you watch a violent movie or TV series during the period, change the channel or turn it off and explain the harms of this content to your child.

I repeat and emphasize that you should not watch violent and exciting movies and series in the presence of children. Some parents themselves are watching and thinking that the child is not paying attention and is in their own world, while this is not the case. Children are aware of everything.

Prepare suitable food for children ‘s laptops and tablets. Send them movies and series suitable for their age to watch.

In connection with the educational point of restricting some content in cyberspace, it has also been published that 71% of children disable their browsing history and safe search to hide their work on the Internet. Installing native search engines can be helpful here and help children use the Internet safely.
