Core i7 12800HX processor test – less than 3% difference in gaming with 12700H

Although a short time has passed since the introduction of the HX series laptop by Intel, but witnessed the first test of the Core i7 12800HX processor in Chinese social network Are.
The Alder Lake HX series is a spiritual successor to the Tiger Lake H45 family, but for one reason only. Unlike Alder Lake P silicon, which uses an integrated chipset, the HX series requires a separate silicon for input / output (HM670 chipset). This chipset increases the number of PCIe lines for graphics, storage and peripherals.
The processor itself uses 16 PCIe Gen 5.0 lines for graphics and 4 PCIe Gen 4.0 lines for SSD. The chipset will add 16 PCIe Gen 4.0 lines and 12 PCIe Gen 3.0 lines. In the image below you can see the new HX processor with chipset as well as Nvidia GN20-E6 graphics (model RTX 3070 Ti).
Since this is the first time we have seen the image of the HX processor, you may be wondering what changes have taken place to desktop silicon. The BGA package (which is similar in size to the LGA) is exactly 2.2 mm narrower, while some capacitors are slightly displaced. However, the original die location has not changed.

Core i7 12800HX processor test
This review uses two similar gaming laptops, the Lenovo Y9000P with GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics (125-150 watts) and similar memory configuration (DDR5 4800). Comparisons include the Core i7 12700H processor (Alder Lake P series with 14 cores) and the Core i7 12800HX (Alder Lake HX series with 16 cores). It should be noted that the 12700H has 115 and 135 watts of PL1 and PL2 power, respectively, while this amount reaches 125 and 175 watts for the 12800HX.

The Core i7 12800HX shows similar single-core performance in related tests, but up to 15% better in terms of multi-core.

In gaming, however, we do not see much improvement and both models have almost the same performance. However, the 2.56% difference in AAA games is in favor of the HX model.
