IOS 15 review; A small update

When Apple released iOS 13, it provided users with many useful features such as Dark Mode with Infinite Bugs. In addition to fixing bugs in the previous version, iOS 14 introduced one or two features such as widgets and setting email applications and third-party browsing as the default app. iOS 15, however, does not fall into either category. Because it does not have the important features of iOS 13, nor has it improved iOS 14 enough to say that it is an update aimed at improvement. Simply put, iOS 15 can be called iOS 14.5. I start my review of iOS 15 with its most important and meaningful features, because as an old user of this operating system that I have been with since iOS 4, I feel that not all of its features have the same impact on a user’s daily use. As a result, I prioritized the features of iOS 15 and moved from the most practical to the least useful.

Safari; Finally a professional browser

The most important change in appearance and meaning that you as a user deal with is Safari. Safari now supports add-ons and can even change the look of your home screen. Most importantly, the address bar has been moved from the top of the page to the bottom to make it easier to work with. Because Apple chooses a name for each feature, this safari mode is also called “Tab Bar”. With the help of Tab Bar, you can easily switch between your open tabs and have a faster browser with one swipe left and right, just like the iPhones with Facebook that moved between apps.

Tab management in Safari iOS 15 has also been improved, and you now see them all as separate blocks instead of tabs on top of each other. This design makes tab management much easier than before. Another new feature of Safari is that, like the Edge and Chrome browsers, you can now customize the home screen. A variety of backgrounds, privacy reports, and the sum of links shared with you are all provided as enabled options. Most important of all is the ability to enable a variety of plugins that developers are offering for safari over time.

I think all of these features make you no longer need to download Chrome and Edge browsers. Because their exclusive features are now implemented in Safari. Of course, keep in mind that Apple does not allow other browsers to use personal engines, and whether Edge or Chrome all have to use the Safari WebKit engine. As a result, you do not see any effect on the loading speed of the pages.

Focus modes; A feature you may forget

One of the key features of iOS 15 is Focus Modes. This feature is essentially the same as “Do Not Disturb” which is now much, much more advanced. However, to activate and personalize properly and treat it, you need to take some time to get the most out of it.

Apple has pre-set up several profiles to start with, such as work, personal, club, but you can create your own personal profile. For example, I created the travel mode. In this case, you can select the people you want to access under any circumstances, and then go to the apps that want to send you notifications. Next, you can even select the home screen pages you want to view while traveling, and finally specify the time or place where the travel profile will be activated. That’s it. Now if you choose a travel profile, only certain people and apps will “bother” you and the rest of you will have to wait until the end of your trip to get a response. Of course, you can always go to messages and people who are not on the list, but the “focus” of the operating system will be on your desired situation.

This feature will be very useful if you get bored of personalization. But I personally think few people use it because so far the “Do Not Disturb” situation has been the same and silencing the phone has always been a priority. However, the combination of focus modes and other widgets and personalizations that you already have access to seems exciting.

Live text; Writings come to life

Another useful feature is called “Live Text”. With the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning, this feature pulls all the texts and numbers out of photos, screenshots and even boards and allows you to treat them exactly like a typed text. For example, all you have to do is point the phone camera at a sign, it will find the live text of the address or phone number written on the sign, and it can simply call it with a tap on the phone number. This feature also allows you to copy the text or translate it into another language altogether. Of course, keep in mind that this feature is only compatible with a few limited languages ​​and does not support Persian at all.

However, this feature is very useful and even recognizes my illegible handwriting and turns it into editable text. Another good thing about Live Text is that it is implemented throughout the operating system and you can use it in your browser, gallery or anywhere else.

Of course, do not forget two points. 1) Live text does not work in videos 2) Only iPhones that use the A12 Bionic chipset (read iPhone Xs and newer) support this feature, and if you have an iPhone 6s or even an X, you will be deprived of this feature.

Siri; Apple Voice Assistant goes offline

I do not know how much you use Siri, but if you are like me, you probably instruct Siri every few minutes. Fortunately, Siri can now perform many of its functions without the Internet. Thanks to the neural engine processing and artificial intelligence of Apple chipsets, most of the processing is done on the device and does not require the Internet. So if you could not tell Siri to turn on WiFi, you can now.

ICloud Plus; An obstacle called sanctions

One of the features that Apple introduced at WWDC was the extra security services that were enabled for iCloud service subscribers. The service, available under the “iCloud +” brand, is available to all subscribers who have purchased the iCloud subscription service, allowing them to hide their email or use Apple’s proprietary VPN service.

As a result, as soon as the iPhone was updated, I went straight to the “Private Relay” service to see how Apple’s VPN works. Unfortunately, at the very beginning of activating this service, I came across a message stating that this service is not available in Iran. Apple says that the Private Rail service, which can hide the user’s IP with the help of two hops between two servers, is not available in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Belarus, China and several other countries, but if you go to another country, you can use this Take advantage of the service.

Despite this limitation, I was not very upset. This is because the service does not allow you to change your geographical area and your traffic will still reach the final website as an IP from the area in which you are present. This means that if you are in Germany and want to access Netflix US content, this service will not work for you because you will eventually reach Netflix with the German IP; The only difference is that Netflix does not know who you are. The second limitation is that this service only works on Safari and does not cover the entire operating system.

The next feature of this service called “Hide My Email” works well in Iran and you can create a strange email and use this email to access websites so that your main email is not bombarded with spam and your identity is hidden. Stay.

Apple Maps + Weather; Iran is still empty

The next two updates, one in full and the other in half, are not available to us Iranians. However, this may be the first time that Apple has considered only a few major cities in the world as its users and left the rest of the users. The new Apple Maps feature, which displays over-the-top detail, is limited to a few cities such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and London.

However, it is interesting to look at this level of detail, which even shows the number of trees in a certain area. Apple has obsessively added layers of detail to many of these cities’ sights to Maps, so you can count on the Statue of Liberty bricks or New York Central Station. Apple says other cities will get to that level of detail soon, but I don’t think even Tehran will include “other cities.”

The weather app has also changed after completing the purchase of the “Dark Sky” app, and now it gives you so much detail that you may not even need it. Almost all the new features of the weather app are active in Iran, but for some reason it does not show the air pollution index. Of course, this feature was also disabled in Shanghai. As it turns out, this feature is gradually being activated for other cities.

All the other big and small features of iOS 15

One of the most important features of iOS 15, perhaps the most exciting, is the “Share Play” feature, which Apple decided not to include in the initial version of the new iPhone because it was not ready. This feature allows you to watch movies or listen to music with your friends in the FaceTime app. Of course, this feature requires all your friends to subscribe to Apple Music or Apple TV Plus.

As for the FaceTime discussion, I would like to add that several small and large features such as ambient noise removal and portrait mode have been added so that you can better communicate with your friends. Overall, iOS 15 is an intergenerational update. Of course, you can’t criticize Apple much, because iOS 14 was a great operating system, and now it’s just better than before. Finally, do not forget that if you are using Iranian apps that you have installed from Iranian App Stores, after installing iOS 15, you need to delete the apps once and install them all from the beginning.
